Embracing Authenticity: The Courageous Journey to Becoming Your True Self

As I recently went through pictures from my trip to Italy, I came across a stunning image of Michelangelo's famous sculpture, the Statue of David. The 17-foot marble masterpiece is a testament to the artist's vision and skill. When asked about the sculpture, Michelangelo shared his approach: "I had a vision of David, and I simply carved away everything that was not David." This quote resonated with me, and I began to reflect on the concept of authenticity and how it relates to our own lives.

Do You Have a Vision of Yourself?

We often hide our true selves beneath layers of fear about what others might think or say. During my TV career, I struggled with this issue, conforming to corporate norms and suppressing my authentic personality. I wore conservative clothes and avoided bold jewelry, fearing that being myself would not fit in. However, I soon discovered that this approach came at a great cost. It was exhausting and emotionally draining to pretend to be someone I wasn't. Over time, I lost touch with my true self and my confidence suffered.

Chiseling Away the Inauthentic

Michelangelo's approach to carving away the non-essential parts of his sculpture serves as a powerful metaphor for our own journey to authenticity. We must be willing to let go of the parts of ourselves that are not truly who we are. This can be a daunting task, but it is essential for living a life that is true to who we are.

Steps to Becoming Your Authentic Self

If you're ready to embark on this courageous journey, here are a few suggestions to help you get started:

  1. Identify Your Core Values and Passions: Take time to reflect on your experiences, values, and concerns. Pay attention to when you feel most like yourself, without limitations or external influences. What truly makes you happy? For me, it's wearing big bold jewelry!

  2. Give Voice to Your Interests: Dare to go against the norm and explore new opportunities. Start with small steps, and don't be afraid to take risks.

  3. Change Your Self-Talk: Speak kindly to yourself and acknowledge your accomplishments. Believe in your abilities and your worth.

  4. Push Boundaries and Explore: Expand your horizons by meeting new people, visiting new places, and trying new things. This will help you grow and discover new aspects of yourself.

  5. Embrace Your Imperfections: Recognize that your unique qualities and quirks make you special and valuable.

  6. Reject the Box: Don't conform to others' expectations. Identify those who support you and learn to ignore the opinions of those who don't matter.

  7. Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a close friend.

The Power of Authenticity

When I finally let go of my inauthentic self, it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I laughed louder, expressed myself more freely, and wore my bold jewelry with joy. Becoming your authentic self is a powerful journey that empowers you to live life on your own terms and never shrink to the image others have of you.
